Due to budget cutbacks and funding, the homework letter will be on a monthly calendar. It will be sent home each Monday inside your child’s homework folder. It needs to be returned each Friday. It does not need to be returned daily! This means that if you have special activities on a certain night of the week (soccer practice, church etc…) they may do their homework the night before or the night after.
Homework will be various activities that will help your child be successful in first grade. My desire for this homework is for you and your child to work on it together. This will keep you up to date on the curriculum. It is very important that this homework is completed and returned on Friday.Homework will be recorded on their progress reports and report cards.
A monthly spelling list will also be sent home on the homework letter.Much of the homework will be centered on these words as well as much time will be spent practicing these words in our classroom. These are basic first grade sight words that the children MUST learn to spell correctly. Each Friday these words will be placed on our “Popcorn Words” bulletin board. This board will also be referred to as our word wall.Once a word is placed on this bulletin board they must always be spelled correctly.I have listed the spelling words on the website www.spellingcity.com.This website has fun, interactive games that the students can use to practice these words. Some of the games are: Hangmouse, word searches, and missing letters. Please see the attached letter for more information.Next to the spelling words there will be a note stating which week it is on spellingcity.com.A list of all of our spelling words are on this website and also my website that you can access through waynecountyschools.org.In addition to these words the children must also learn how to make new words (often rhyming words) from these words. These words will be identified with an * on the homework list. These rhyming words will also be on the spelling test. For instance a spelling word may be and.For the spelling test they will have to spell and as well as words that contain and: land, landing, sand, and sandy. These words that we generate will not be sent home, but if your child participates in class and with practice at home, they will be successful on these tests. Please understand that I have listed only the five basic words on spellingcity.com-you can go in and make your own lists to include any rhyming words or words with endings added. Please remember that although it is not stated on the homework paper students must study their reading folders until they have mastered the entire folder. This folder is due each Thursday.
Some students may be able to complete all homework quickly, while others may struggle. You know your child’s ability. If they can not do the assigned homework(sight word folders, spelling assigned popcorn words, and other assignments) in 30 minutes or less, please focus on reading and spelling. Please write me a note in their homework notebook explaining that it took longer than expected and the incomplete homework will be excused. Fun suggestions for working with your child on learning their sight words are:rainbow writing them (write in one color first, then trace over the letters in several more colors),www.spellingcity.com, parent scrambles words and students unscramble, play hangman, write the words large and decorate them with stickers, markers, etc…,write them in the student's favorite color, parents favorite color, or least favorite color, write them in sentences or a story, cut letters out of newspapers or magazines to make each word, write them as large as you can and then as small as you can, write them on a magnadoodle or a dry erase board. Thank you for all your support!
